Krall, Haynes and Spalding in Rochester Lineup
Pianist Diana Krall, drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Esperanza Spalding are among the more than 1,000 musicians who will perform at this year’s Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, taking place June 22–30.
The 11th edition of the festival will include 300 concerts in 18 venues in Rochester, N.Y. Also in the announced lineup are Karrin Allyson, Terence Blanchard, Gerald Clayton, Eliane Elias, Benny Green, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Norah Jones, Grégoire Maret, Keb’ Mo’, Catherine Russell, Trombone Shorty, Mike Stern, Colin Stetson and Jimmy Vaughan.
Krall, who played piano on and wrote rhythm arrangements for Paul McCartney’s new album, will perform at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on June 22. Krall’s band includes Anthony Wilson (guitar), Robert Hurst (bass) and Karriem Riggins (drums).
Haynes, who was elected into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 2004, will lead his Fountain of Youth Band through two sets at Kilbourn Hall (at Eastman School of Music) on June 29.
Spalding, who is on the cover of the May issue of DownBeat, made her debut at the Rochester fest in 2007, performing in the Club Pass Series at Max of Eastman Place. Five years later, the Grammy-winning artist will headline at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on June 23.
Spalding’s new album, Radio Music Society (Heads Up/Concord), topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.
“Before Esperanza Spalding performed here in 2007, this very special artist was unquestionably destined for super-stardom,” said John Nugent, the festival’s producer and artistic director.
Guitarist Dweezil Zappa will lead a band through a selection of the music of his father, the late Frank Zappa, at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on June 26. (Frank Zappa was elected into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1994.)
Among the festival’s free events are nearly 70 concerts, which will feature 16 high school bands and several Eastman School of Music youth ensembles. Admission is also free to the nightly jam sessions with the Bob Sneider Trio at the Rochester Plaza State St. Bar & Grill. Jam sessions begin at 10:30 p.m. at the festival's official hotel, the Rochester Plaza, located at 70 State Street.
Details and a full lineup are posted at the fest’s website.
