Jazz Luminaries To Honor Dave Brubeck on May 11
Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera and Randy Brecker are among the musicians who are scheduled to pay tribute to Dave Brubeck on Saturday, May 11.
Dubbed “A Celebration of the Life and Music of Dave Brubeck,” and sponsored by the late pianist’s family, the free event will take place at 4 p.m. at The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Ave. in New York City.
This is not a ticketed event, and all are welcome.
Among the other artists scheduled to perform are the pianist’s sons Darius, Chris, Matthew and Dan Brubeck, as well as Bobby Militello, Eugene Wright, Bill Charlap, Renee Rosnes, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Jon Faddis, Rufus Reid, Paul Winter and Hilary Kole.
Brubeck died on Dec. 5, 2012, at the age of 91, and a private funeral was held in Wilton, Conn., in December.
Brubeck was the recipient of dozens of accolades, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 and the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy in 2008. Brubeck was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 1999, and he was elected to the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1994.
