2002 JVC Jazz Festival Newport Announces Lineup

The lineup for the JVC Jazz Festival Newport, Aug. 9-11, has been released. The festivities get underway on Friday night, Aug. 9, with a show by Tony Bennett at the Newport Casino International Tennis Hall of Fame. Tickets for this event run from $30-$85.

The shows at Fort Adams State Park run from Aug. 10-11, with muic taking place on two stages from 11:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. On Saturday shows include the Cos of Good Music conducted by Bill Cosby with Don Alias, Dwayne Burno, Ndugu Chancler, Robin Eubanks, Craig Handy, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Carlos Ward and James Williams; Tony Bennett; Dave Holland Quintet; Oleta Adams; Greg Osby Quartet featuring Jason Moran; Preservation Hall Jazz Band; Sex Mob; Ballin’ The Jack; and Yerba Buena.

On Sunday performers include Isaac Haynes; Arturo Sandoval; Nicholas Payton Quinet with James Carter; Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe; Lea Delaria; David S. Ware; Bullfrog featuring Kid Koala; Antibalas and the Holmes Brothers.

There will be a special pre-sale on the internet and at the Newport festival office only, on May 10 beginning at 10 a.m. To participate on the internet, log on to www.festivalproductions.net. For Newport area patrons, tickets will also be available during the pre-sale at the festival office: 770 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, open May 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash, checks and major credit cards accepted.
