New York City will get a new taste of Afro-Peruvian jazz and dining when the Tutuma Social Club opens on April 28. Trumpeter Gabriel Alegria is serving as its artistic consultant. The music will be featured throughout the week and the venue also says it will not require a cover charge or drink minimum.

Along with Peruvian artists, Tutuma Social Club will also host a series for North American jazz artists who investigate the country’s musical idioms. A lunchtime series will feature jazz instrumental versions of Peruvian folk songs.

Artists scheduled to appear at Tutuma Social Club during its first month include trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and drummer Jon Wikan (April 28–May 3), vocalist Angela Vicente (May5–10), pianist Andy Milne (May 12–17) Argentinian vocalist Sofia Rei Koutsovitis (May19–24) and Peruvian vocalist Pilar de la Hoz (May 26–31).  In addition, the Peruvian percussionist and zapateo dancer Freddy “Huevito” Lobaton will be performing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when not on tour with the Afro-Peruvian Sextet, which will appear Thursday-Sunday nights. The New York University Afro-Peruvian Jazz Ensemble will perform on Monday, May 11, May 14 and May 18.
