Friends and family of Andrew Hill have organized a tribute concert to the late composer and pianist at St. Peter’s Church in New York City.
The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 23. Longtime friends and colleagues of Hill, including saxophonist Greg Osby, pianist Jason Moran and Andrew Hill’s Point of Departure Sextet, will perform. In addition, Blue Note and Mosaic Records Producer Michael Cuscuna and Harlem Stage’s Executive Director, Patricia Cruz, will deliver spoken tributes. The event is free and open to the public.
Andrew Hill was widely recognized as one of the most innovative composers in jazz. Earlier this year, he was voted by the Critics into the DownBeat Hall of Fame. He died in April.
St. Peter’s Church is located at 619 Lexington Ave. at 54th Street.
James Brandon Lewis earned honors for Artist of the Year and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year. Three of his recordings placed in the Albums of the Year category.
