Earshot Jazz has appointed Dr. Stephan Blanford as the organization’s new Executive Director. Following the retirement of John Gilbreath in 2025, the Earshot Jazz board began a thorough, national search for a new executive director. Blanford was selected for his ability to provide Earshot Jazz with strong strategic focus, deepen community and artist engagement and support the organization’s long-term success. A seasoned nonprofit leader, community organizer and lifelong jazz devotee, he brings a deep understanding of nonprofit operations and a talent for guiding organizations toward lasting financial health while staying true to their mission.

“Stephan embodies the kind of leadership that inspires confidence, energizes community and strengthens our mission at every level,” said Earshot Jazz Board Chair Maurice James. “His depth of nonprofit experience, combined with his lifelong passion for jazz, makes him the ideal person to shepherd Earshot into its next chapter. We’re thrilled to welcome him, and we know our audiences, artists and partners will feel his commitment to this work from day one.”

Most recently, Blanford served as the executive director of Children’s Alliance, where he advanced policies that improved the lives of Washington’s children. Leading a team of staff, board and partners, he helped to secure billions in new investments for kids, and built strong relationships with donors and philanthropic sources to fuel this success.

“I am honored to step into this role and am eager to help Earshot Jazz continue to grow as an organization, while continuing the outstanding programs that we’re known and loved for,” said Blanford. “I’m eager to listen, collaborate and build with the artists, audiences and partners who make this scene so extraordinary. Together, we’ll carry this legacy forward with creativity, equity and renewed energy.”

In his new role, Stephan will focus on deepening community partnerships, expanding philanthropic support and strengthening Earshot’s role in Seattle’s jazz ecosystem. He will work closely with Earshot’s staff, board, artistic partners and regional collaborators to continue the organization’s dedication to jazz.

During the past year, Earshot Jazz continued to bring unique and transformative experiences to audiences throughout the region. The 37th annual Earshot Jazz Festival included a diverse schedule of emerging artists and established masters, while highlighting the region’s own world-class resident artists. Additional programming included publishing its monthly magazine, providing artist support initiatives and ending the year with another inspiring Concert of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Music.

“As Earshot Jazz enters its next phase of growth, we sought a proven leader with a deep understanding of the evolving nonprofit landscape and the demands of today’s dynamic environment,” said James. “We look forward to the next chapter of Earshot Jazz and the vision and leadership Stephan brings to the organization.”

As a celebrated steward of music and culture, Earshot Jazz is dedicated to fostering a bright future for jazz in the Pacific Northwest. For more information, visit earshot.org. DB
