Henry Threadgill To Release New Disc

Henry Threadgill will release This Brings Us To (Pi) on Oct. 27. The disc will be the saxophonist’s first in eight years.

Threadgill’s group, Zooid, is named after a cell that can move independently of its host organism. He also uses this spirit for the group’s musical language: Threadgill’s compositions are based along a series of three-note intervals and each musician is free to improvise their own melodies based on these assigned intervals.

Along with Threadgill on alto saxophone and flute, Zooid consists of guitarist Liberty Ellman, trombonist/tubaist Jose Davila, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Elliot Kavee.

“She said, ‘A lot of people are going to try and stop you,’” Sheryl Bailey recalls of the advice she received from jazz guitarist Emily Remler (1957–’90). “‘They’re going to say you slept with somebody, you’re a dyke, you’re this and that and the other. Don’t listen to them, and just keep playing.’”
