Kate McGarry Expands Musical Palette This Fall

  I

Vocalist Kate McGarry is following last spring’s release of The Target (Palmetto) with several new musical endeavors.

McGarry—known for the diversity of influences that play on her jazz stylings, including traditional Irish music—will join the faculty at Manhattan School of Music next month. She will also take on several recording projects, including singing with the vocal group MOSS, and writing, recording and producing 63 children’s songs for the Heinle Picture Dictionary For Children.

In a recent interview on National Public Radio, McGarry discussed her approach as a singer, bandleader and composer. “I love jazz music and I’ve had different times in my life where I focus really strongly on different genres,” McGarry said. “So I look at it like there’s a well inside and I’m just putting different things in that well and then they’re going to come out later.”

“Both of us are quite grounded in the craft, the tradition and the harmonic sense,” Rosenwinkel said of his experience playing with Allen. “Yet I felt we shared something mystical as well.”
