Lionel Hampton Funeral Arrangements Set

The funeral plans for Lionel Hampton, who died Saturday of complication from old age at the age of 94, have been set. There will be a public viewing on Friday, Sept. 6 from from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Riverside Church in New York, 120th St. and Riverside Drive.

The ceremony will be held at the church on Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.. Before the service, there will be a New Orleans second-line jazz group marching to the church in front of the casket from the Apollo Theater on 125th Street to Riverside. This starts at 9:30 a.m., and the public is invited to attend.

    Hammond came to the blues through the folk boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which he experienced firsthand in New York’s Greenwich Village.
