Live Earth Rio Back On After Cancellation

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL—A Brazilian judge Thursday reversed her decision to cancel Saturday’s Live Earth event in Rio after police told organizers that sufficient security would be provided, the Associated Press has reported.

With crowds expected to exceed 700,000, security concerns had prompted officials to halt the free event, scheduled to take place on Rio’s Copacabana Beach. Police, who had told Live Earth promoters that not enough officers would be available, reversed course when changes in another concert scheduled at the same time freed up additional officers.

Live Earth is a series of simultaneous concerts promoted by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to spread awareness about climate change. The concerts will take place on all seven continents, and Rio’s lineup includes Lenny Kravitz, Macy Gray and Pharrell Williams.
