Manning Plans Return Concert to Bay Area

Saxophonist Sarah Manning will return to the San Francisco Bay Area for a concert with her new group, Shatter The Glass, at the the Oakland Museum of California on Friday, Nov. 9. Formerly from the Bay Area, Manning recently moved to New York. Her new group features Art Hirahara on piano, Thomson Kneeland on bass and Kyle Struve on drums.

“Two key objectives of Shatter the Glass are to provide a role model for women and girls interested in the music and to eradicate the notion that women are somehow ‘the other’ in jazz, as perpetuated by the many ‘Women in Jazz’ festivals, and novelty ‘girl groups’ and events that marginalize their contributions,” said alto saxophonist Manning, who in 2006 released Live At Yoshi’s: Two Rooms Same Door on ArtistShare.

The concert begins at 8 p.m., and is part of the Museum’s ongoing concert series in its 240-seat James Moore Theatre. For tickets or information, contact the Oakland Museum of California at (510) 238-3009 or go to museumca.org/ticket.

“She said, ‘A lot of people are going to try and stop you,’” Sheryl Bailey recalls of the advice she received from jazz guitarist Emily Remler (1957–’90). “‘They’re going to say you slept with somebody, you’re a dyke, you’re this and that and the other. Don’t listen to them, and just keep playing.’”
