The Monterey Jazz Festival will launch its 50th anniversary by honoring pianist and composer Dave Brubeck with the MJF Legends Award at its Golden Gala Celebration on April 7 at the Tehama Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.

“Dave Brubeck is one of the reasons that the Monterey Jazz Festival exists,” said Tim Jackson, general manager of the festival. “This award acknowledges the gratitude that the festival and jazz fans from around the world feel for a man who has transcended the boundaries of what we expect a musician to be.”

The celebration features dinner, a live auction and entertainment, with proceeds going to the festival’s youth jazz education programs.

Monterey’s mayor, Chuck Della Salla, has also announced that the week of April 8 will be Dave Brubeck week.
