New Orleans Violinist Signs with Basin Street

Theresa Andersson’s career has begun its ascent.

With a Big Easy Award for Best Female Artist in 2002 and two consecutive years with a top-20 album at the New Orlean’s JazzFest, the Swedish-born violinist, guitarist and vocalist has signed with Basin Street Records—with her first album under that label out in April—and she’s making a performing cameo in an upcoming John Travolta Movie “A Love Song For Bobby Long.”

Andersson has already released three albums as a leader with other labels, but she’s excited about the opportunity she’ll have at Basin Street, a label that procures the music she’s studied since moving to New Orleans at 18.

“I’ve been watching the company grow since its inception,” she said. “I’m very proud to be included on such a distinguished roster.”

She joins Los Hombres Calientes, Kermit Ruffins, Jason Marsalis, Dr. Michael White and others on the Basin Street lineup. She recorded the as-yet-untitled album in November 2003 with her performing group: guitarist Glenn LeBlanc, bassist Lloyd Lambert and drummer Jamal Batiste.

The Travolta movie takes place in New Orleans, where a young woman has returned home to find herself after her mother dies. Andersson will take to the stage during the movie to showcase her talents. It should be in theaters sometime in 2004.

In the meantime, anyone can experience Andersson live every week at Carrollton Station and Chelsea’s in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, receptively.
