Saxophonist Ornette Coleman will kick off the 2007-‘08 UCLA Live jazz series at the school’s Royce Hall on Sept. 26.
The 77-year-old jazz icon and his quintet will perform new music and work from his latest Grammy-nominated album, Sound Grammar. Earlier this year, the disc took Jazz Album of the Year honors in DownBeat’s Critics Poll, and Coleman also picked up awards for Jazz Artist of the Year and Alto Saxophonist of the Year.
UCLA’s concert series continues throughout the academic year with several top names in jazz, including Terence Blanchard on Jan. 18, 2008; Keith Jarrett and his trio on March 5, 2008; and vocalist Dianne Reeves on May 22, 2008.

James Brandon Lewis earned honors for Artist of the Year and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year. Three of his recordings placed in the Albums of the Year category.
