Regina Carter, John Zorn Named MacArthur Fellows

Violinist Regina Carter and saxophonist John Zorn are among the 25 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellows for 2006.

MacArthur fellows receive a $500,000 cash award (commonly called a “genius grant”), which is distributed over the course of five years.

“Carter is a master of improvisational violin,” reads the statement on the MacArthur Foundation web site. “Though her work draws upon a wide range of musical influences, she has crafted a signature voice and style.”

The MacArthur Foundation’s web site describes Zorn as “an accomplished saxophonist, versatile composer, improvisational maestro and an ardent promoter of experimental music.”
