Rez Abbasi Connects America With South Asia on Bazaar

  I

Guitarist Rez Abbasi will bring together jazz with the sounds of India and Pakistan on his upcoming disc, Bazaar (Zoho). The recording features his hybrid sitar-guitar, guest vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia and South Asian percussion within a jazz organ trio context.

“Developing modern jazz through the musics of the world—that’s where my energy wants to go,” Abbasi said. “I don’t want to separate genres and styles; I’d rather bring them together. I also don’t want to pin myself down only as a jazz guitarist, but more as a versatile, universal guitarist.”

“Cerebral and academic thought is a different way to approach music,” Flea says of his continuing dive into jazz. “I’ve always relied on emotion and intuition and physicality.”
