Shanachie Entertainment to Release Congo Square

  I

Shanachie Entertainment will release Congo Square March 18. The two-hour DVD features performances by Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Ghanaian drum master Yacub Addy and his nine-piece percussion/vocal ensemble Odadaa!.

The collaboration was recorded at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival and was commissioned by Jazz At Lincoln Center.

The piece’s fourteen movements pay tribute to New Orleans’ storied marketplace, Congo Square, where African slaves gathered to play their own music and dance on Sundays during the 1700s and 1800s.

Congo Square was previously available on two CDs.
