Unreleased Charles Mingus Performance To Arrive On Disc

A mid-1960s concert of Charles Mingus’ octet is to be released on Sept. 26 as Music Written For Monterey 1965 Not Heard…Played Live In Its Entirety At UCLA (Sue Mingus Music).

This was a workshop performance of music that the bassist had intended to debut at that year’s Monterey Jazz Festival, but his set was cut short. So he premiered the music the following week at UCLA.

“What eventually transpires after the musical fist fights, extraordinary solos, hirings and firings and a feast of new composition is musicians achieving incredible musical heights,” said Sue Mingus.

Along with this disc, the Mingus Big Mand will release Live In Tokyo At The Blue Note, 2005 (Sue Mingus Music) on the same day.
