The Vail Jazz Foundation has announced that it will close the bulk of its operations by the end of the current calendar year.

A letter addressed to jazz fans on behalf of the Vail Jazz Faculty and associates put forth the reasons for the foundation‘s shuttering: “Vail Jazz has faced the loss of founder Howard Stone, whose death we still grieve. The absence of Howard’s deep knowledge of jazz, relationships with musicians and supporters, and managerial acumen has left the Foundation with substantial challenges. Howard was, in every sense of the word, irreplaceable. Additionally, these are difficult days for arts organizations nationwide, and Vail Jazz is no exception. We are proud of what we have achieved with your support and are sad to deliver this news.”

Citing successful educational programs such as Vail Jazz Goes to School and Jammin’ Jazz Kids, foundation members encouraged jazz educators to continue their “important work with young musicians to help keep this art form thriving.”
