Wynton Educates Brilliant Corners

Wynton Marsalis will help kick off the Education Program at Saint Paul, Minn.-based Brilliant Corners jazz club with a Quintet performance on Oct. 21.

Established in February 2003, Brilliant Corners is “an arts organization with education, community programs and performance all under one roof,” according to Jeremy Walker, owner and artistic director. “We want the club to be the place to get up close with the music.” They feature local and national artists along with open jam sessions on some nights.

Alongside the intimate, 52-seat jazz performances, Brilliant Corners’ Education Program will offer individual lessons, workshops, ensemble lessons and a survey course about the basics of jazz titled “Jazz is for Everyone.”

To help launch the Education Program, which is modeled after work done at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis will bring alto and sopranino saxophonist Wessel “Warmdaddy” Anderson, drummer Ali Jackson, pianist Eric Lewis and bassist Carlos Henriquez to play three shows. The Quintet recently signed with Blue Note, and a new CD is scheduled for March 2004.

Tickets go on sale Oct. 11 at noon and must be purchased in-person. Adults pay $45 and there are a limited number of student tickets available for $20.

“Watching people like Max Roach or Elvin Jones and seeing how they utilize the whole drum kit in a very rhythmic and melodic way and how they stretched time — that was a huge inspiration to me,” Hussain said in DownBeat.
