3 Cohens Intertwine Again on Braid

The 3 Cohens sibling trio will release a new disc, Braid (Anzic) on Nov. 20.

“The name ‘braid’ is a metaphor for the way the three of us play together,” said trumpeter Avishai Cohen. “On this record, and in general, we have a way of improvising together or accompanying each other in which we braid our melodies.”

Avishai co-leads the group along with saxophonist/clarinetist Anat Cohen and saxophonist Yuval Cohen. This recording also includes pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Omer Avital and drummer Eric Harland.

Most of the tracks on the disc consist of the Cohens’ original compositions (although they also interpret Jimmy Van Heusen’s “It Could Happen To You”). Yuval Cohen says that one new composition, “Elegy For Eliku,” is dedicated to their uncle Eliku who recently died.

“The dark melody and dark harmonies try to express this endless sorrow,” Cohen said. “The three lines that pile one on top of the other are meant to increase the tension and to express those sad feelings that the three of us share.”

The 3 Cohens will mark the release of Braid with two sets at New York’s Jazz Standard on Nov. 4.
