Juilliard Jazz announced that its Juilliard Jazz All-Stars will tour Korea and Japan for three weeks this summer, July 23 through August 17, 2008. Juilliard Jazz last toured Japan in 2005. The group will give clinics, master classes and performances in Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Osaka and Shizuoka, Japan. The Jazz All-Stars include drummer Carl Allen, tenor saxophonist Ron Blake, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci, pianist Mayuko Katakura, pianist Adam Birnbaum and bassist Yasushi Nakamura. The group will perform music from the jazz standard repertoire, as well as new arrangements and original compositions by members.

The Juilliard Jazz All-Stars released their first CD, Standards (M&I Jazz) in Japan on July 11.

Allen, who has toured in Japan for more than 20 years, remarked, “I discussed my desire to bring a Juilliard Jazz group to Asia and wanted to make sure there would be an educational component to the tour…We’re very excited about interacting with fellow jazz musicians and fans in both countries, and we look forward to having a continuing presence in Asia.”
