Saxophonist Benny Golson will be honored with the Mellon Jazz 2007 Living Legacy Award in a special ceremony Oct. 12. The event will take place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Golson’s illustrious career has taken him across the musical spectrum, from a stint as musical director for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to a successful career writing scores for television shows. He was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1996.

Previous Living Legacy Award winners include Rufus Reid, Jimmy Heath and Clark Terry.
