Sun Ra Event Invades Knitting Factory

NEW YORK—The Sun Ra Impossible Space Circus will headline Sunday at the Knitting Factory in lower Manhattan, playing from Sun Ra’s original charts and performing original adaptations and interpretations of the free jazz icon’s music.

This is the third presentation of the Space Circus, this time including Sun Ra Arkestra alumni Juini Booth, Dave Davis, Cecil Brooks III and On Ka’a Davis.

Sun Ra was a bizarre composer and pianist who was known for his unconventional compositions and extraterrestrial stage personna. He is credited as a major figure in introducing electronic music to a jazz context.

Tickets to Sunday’s show, which begins at 7 p.m., are $11 in advance and $15 at the door. For more details, visit knittingfactory.com.

“Both of us are quite grounded in the craft, the tradition and the harmonic sense,” Rosenwinkel said of his experience playing with Allen. “Yet I felt we shared something mystical as well.”
