Verve Restores Parisian Mingus

  I

Verve Records has reissued The Great Concert Of Charles Mingus, a 1964 recording from Paris’ Theatre des Champs-Elysees.

The recording comes from a 16-date, George Wein-organized European tour that took Mingus and his sextet from Oslo, Norway, to Milan, Italy. The night before the Paris concert, Johnny Coles was rushed to the hospital. The remaining quintet, which is heard on the album, features Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond.

For the two-disc reissue, Verve restored the performance to its original running order and added previously excluded tracks like “A.T.F.W.” and “So Long Eric.” Mingus’ introductions of the band and select songs have also been restored and added.
