Fred Hersch Kicks Off Tour at Village Vanguard

  I

Following the Feb. 21 release of his new solo album Fred Hersch In Amsterdam: Live At The Bimhuis, Fred Hersch will perform a week of solo piano, from Feb. 28—March 5, at the Village Vanguard—the first time in the venue’s 70-year history that a pianist has done so.

These performances will kick off a national tour that will include stops in Easton, Pa.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Kalamazoo, Mich., and Grand Rapids, Mich., coming to an end at the Regattabar in Boston. Hersch begins the European leg of the tour in May.

Fred Hersch in Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis showcases the talents of the solo jazz pianist whose rhythmic vitality has become his trademark.

“I think there is a certain un-self-consciousness about the performances on this disc that is extremely difficult for me (or almost anyone) to achieve in a recording studio,” Hersch said of the recording. “I had one of those magical nights where everything felt right.”

“She said, ‘A lot of people are going to try and stop you,’” Sheryl Bailey recalls of the advice she received from jazz guitarist Emily Remler (1957–’90). “‘They’re going to say you slept with somebody, you’re a dyke, you’re this and that and the other. Don’t listen to them, and just keep playing.’”
