Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane received Pulitzer commendations on
April 16.
Coleman’s Sound Grammar recording was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music. The honor includes a $10,000 prize.
Coltrane received a “special citation,” for his “masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz,” according to the Pulitzer Prize Board.
Hammond came to the blues through the folk boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which he experienced firsthand in New York’s Greenwich Village.
