RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL—A judge canceled Saturday’s Live Earth concert in Rio after officials said the police presence would be insufficient to contain the crowd, which was expected to top 700,000, the Associated Press has reported.

Live Earth organizers said they will appeal the decision and hope to restore the concert, which was to feature Lenny Kravitz, Macy Gray, Pharrell Williams, MV Bill and Jorge Ben.

The concert was part of a global event to increase awareness of climate change, with simultaneous concerts to take place in London, Johannesburg, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and East Rutherford, N.J.
