Singer Champian Fulton Teams Up With Sultans Of Swing

Singer Champian Fulton teamed up with David Berger’s Sultans of Swing for her new disc of standards, Champian (Such Sweet Thunder). She will mark its release with trio sets at New York’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Nov. 20–24. These high-profile gigs come at a particularly early time for Fulton, who just turned 22 this past September.

Berger says that when he met Champian in 2006, she “not only had the musical skills on a par with the other musicians in the band, she was a perfect stylistic fit.”

“I knew instinctively how to write for her, and in turn, she knew immediately how to fit what she did into the arrangements,” Berger said. “After the initial three arrangements, we planned an entire album, designing each song specifically to feature her and all the individual players in the band.”

Along with the upcoming Dizzy’s Club sets, Champian and the Sultans Of Swing perform every Tuesday night at New York’s Birdland.

“She said, ‘A lot of people are going to try and stop you,’” Sheryl Bailey recalls of the advice she received from jazz guitarist Emily Remler (1957–’90). “‘They’re going to say you slept with somebody, you’re a dyke, you’re this and that and the other. Don’t listen to them, and just keep playing.’”
