Do The Math and Heads Up have announced the release of the new album from The Bad Plus, PROG, due out May 8.

PROG, the group’s fifth studio album, is the first record on the band’s own Do The Math imprint.

“Like everything we do, this record brings together a lot of different influences, without drawing any lines around one style or another,” said bassist Reid Anderson. “We don’t create barriers. It’s all brought together with a very open mind. We’ll try anything, as long as it makes good music.”

The album will contain a mix of original compositions and covers from Tears for Fears, Burt Bacharach, Rush and David Bowie.

Hammond came to the blues through the folk boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which he experienced firsthand in New York’s Greenwich Village.

“Cerebral and academic thought is a different way to approach music,” Flea says of his continuing dive into jazz. “I’ve always relied on emotion and intuition and physicality.”

“These days, with curated news, where people only get half the story, people can’t even speak to family members anymore,” Schneider laments.

“We thought it’s important that Ronin has a new statement,” said Nik Bärtsch of his band’s latest album, Spin. “The sound is differently produced, so it reflects more of who we are.”
