(Photo: Bob Thiele)A tribute to John Coltrane is one thing, but there is much more to the iconic saxophonist’s 100th anniversary celebration already in motion. It includes a wealth of Coltrane reissues, newly released historical recordings as well as tribute tours and recordings. Here are a few.
The Tiberi Tapes (Impulse!)
Considered a holy grail of Coltrane’s art, The Tiberi Tapes finally receive a first-ever release to the public. This set of live recordings was captured by musician Frank Tiberi in the early 1960s, documenting the tenor saxophonist in a variety of live settings in New York and Philadelphia. The complete set goes live on Sept. 23, Coltrane’s 100th birthday.
Impulse! has slated a series of other releases during the year, including Africa/Brass, Impressions, Ascension, Meditations, Live At Birdland and The Essential John Coltrane.
John Coltrane: 1960–1964 Mono (Rhino High Fidelity)
Here’s a box set pulling together five Coltrane classics (Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz, My Favorite Things, Olé Coltrane, Coltrane Plays The Blues and Coltrane’s Sound) into one über high-end package featuring a AAA cut from the original analog master tapes and pressed on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl. It’s limited to 2,000 copies.
Coltrane (Craft Original Jazz Classics)
Coltrane’s first solo recording, laid down in 1957 at Van Gelder Studio right after he worked with the Miles Davis Quintet on Davis’ Cookin’ and just before he joined the Thelonious Monk Quartet.
The Best Of John Coltrane (Craft)
Culled from Coltrane’s sessions in the late ’50s, the six-tune set focuses on the development of the tenor saxophonist’s sheets of sound.
Branford Marsalis & Dianne Reeves, Dedicated To You (Blue Note)
The duo, backed by Marsalis’ quartet mates (Joey Calderazzo, Eric Revis and Justin Faulkner), delivers a beautiful tribute to the classic music created by John Coltrane and vocalist Johnny Hartman.
Jim Snidero, House Of Trane (Savant)
Alto saxophonist Jim Snidero gets out his love for Coltrane with this recording coming out in late October that features eight Trane tracks inspired by Snidero’s visit to the John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, New York.
Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Anata: Spirit Of Coltrane (Impulse!)
Also out in late October, the master flutist honors the influence of Coltranw by leading a 21-artist collective including Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, Shabaka Hutchings, Azar Lawrence, Joel Ross Aja Monet and more.
Miles Davis & John Coltrane, The Complete Columbia Recordings, 1955–1961 (Columbia/Legacy)
The Grammy-winning package returns to vinyl and CD for the first time in a quarter century to celebrate the centennials of both icons. It’s a nine-LP or six-CD set coming out in early November.
Coltrane 100: Legacy
This project gets its L.A. premiere Sept. 23 at the Hollywood Bowl with new arrangements of Coltrane repertoire reinterpreted for orchestra, featuring tenor saxophonist (and Coltrane disciple) Lakecia Benjamin. The tour debuted in St. Louis earlier this year with Joe Lovano on tenor. He reprised the role on Sept. 4 at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and Lovano will perform it again on Sept. 25 in Liège, Belgium. Ravi Coltrane is featured on some dates, too!
Ravi Coltrane’s Centennial Celebrations
The tenor-playing son of John and Alice has his quartet on tour honoring his father with his own personal style and sound. Ravi and Terence Blanchard are also touring a tribute to the centennials of both Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Isaiah Collier Plays Coltrane
The fiery saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist has been wowing audiences with reinterpretations of Coltrane’s work at festivals this year with more to come, hitting spots like the Monterey Jazz Festival.

The Philadelphia City Council passed a resolution to declare Sept. 23, 2026, John Coltrane Day.
Coltrane Revisited: Centennial Celebration
Beginning tonight (Sept. 22) and through Sept. 26, drummer Steve Smith continues a five-week residency at Birdland in New York City with a tribute to Trane featuring Jimmy Greene on saxophones, Troy Roberts on tenor saxophone, Helen Sung on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Smith on the skins. DB
Wilson’s ability to connect to audiences helped her to win two Grammy awards and multiple other accolades. She was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2022.
