DownBeat contributor Ted Panken has won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music journalism for his story “Smalls Universe” about the formation of the scene at the New York club Smalls. The article appeared in the June 2006 issue of DownBeat. Panken will be honored in a December ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.
Peplowski first came to prominence in legacy swing bands, including the final iteration of the Benny Goodman Orchestra, before beginning a solo career in the late 1980s.
