Saxophonist Marchel Ivery Dies

  I

Saxophonist Marchel Ivery—a leader of the potent “Texas tenor” sound—died on Tuesday in Dallas. He was 69.

Like such other Texans as David “Fathead” Newman and Arnett Cobb, Ivery’s sound conveyed a warm, blues-drenched, tone. He had worked alongside Art Blakey and Red Garland, and recorded a series of well-received discs as a leader in the 1990s. These titles included Marchel’s Mood , which also featured Cedar Walton, and Marchel Ivery Meets Joey DeFrancesco .
