Thelonious Monk 90th Birthday Celebration in New York

The Manhattan Center in New York will host a celebration Jan. 26 for Thelonious Monk’s 90th birthday. Bill Cosby will host the evening’s festivities, which will include a multimedia tribute to the pianist. The evening’s lineup includes performances by T.S. Monk, Monk’s son, along with Ben Riley and the Monk Legacy Septet.

There will also be a viewing of rare Monk moments, provided by Reelin’ in the Years, which recently released a video of Thelonious Monk performing live in Europe. Other special guests for the evening include vocalist Carolyn Leonhart, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery and Sam Newsome. Winners of the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition Ambrose Akinmusire and Jean Caze will also perform at the tribute.
