Central Brooklyn Consortium Presents Festival

The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium will present its 9th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival from March 29–May 2, with concerts and events in New York.

This year’s theme is Brooklyn-In The Jazz Tradition. “Tradition makes reference to our ancestors and the cultural legacy they left behind,” said Jitu Weusi, chairman of Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium. “Today we must research and study the jazz legacy of Brooklyn and use it to mold and shape the future of our lives.”

The fest is a cultural celebration that also brings together the borough’s creative communities (literature, film, photography and education) with jazz. Programs and performances will be held at numerous locales including Weeksville Heritage Center, Dr. S. Stevan Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch, as well as Brooklyn entertainment venues.

Highlights will include an award presentation to vocalist Nancy Wilson, a tribute to Max Roach, a swing dance party with Ray Abrams Big Band featuring vocalist Donna Tulivu Cumberbatch, along with photography exhibits, film screenings and lectures.

“Cerebral and academic thought is a different way to approach music,” Flea says of his continuing dive into jazz. “I’ve always relied on emotion and intuition and physicality.”
