SFJAZZ Collective Releases New Nonesuch Album

  I

The SFJAZZ Collective released its second album on Nonesuch on March 14, SFJAZZ Collective 2.

The group, under the artistic direction of Joshua Redman, released its first Nonesuch album in 2005, and included original compositions as well as songs by Ornette Coleman (arranged by Gil Goldstein). The same year, the second incarnation of the Collective—with Redman on saxophone, Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Renee Rosnes (piano), Miguel Zenon (alto saxophone), Matt Penman (bass) and Isaac Smith (trombone)—toured the U.S., playing original compositions by the group’s members as well as works by John Coltrane. Selections from this season comprise SFJAZZ Collective 2.

In 2006, the Collective includes the same members, with the exception of a new trombonist, Andre Hayward. They are currently on tour, playing new compositions by each of the members and songs by Herbie Hancock, again arranged by Goldstein.

“Cerebral and academic thought is a different way to approach music,” Flea says of his continuing dive into jazz. “I’ve always relied on emotion and intuition and physicality.”
