Verve Digs Up Lost Getz

Verve Records has announced the release of Bossas And Ballads: The Lost Sessions, a previously overlooked studio session by legendary saxophonist Stan Getz.

Recorded in 1989 with pianist Kenny Barron, drummer Victor Lewis and bassist George Mraz, the relaxed A&M session got lost in the shadow of the orchestral, and more ambitious, Apasionado.

“When we rediscovered the tapes, we realized how good they were,” said session producer Herb Alpert. “It’s straightahead Stan playing with a strength and sweetness that characterized this last period of his life.”

Along with four Kenny Barron originals, the album has “instantly definitive” interpretations of Mal Waldron, Russ Freeman and Thad Jones.

“These days, with curated news, where people only get half the story, people can’t even speak to family members anymore,” Schneider laments.
